  • Greetings!

I hope everyone in the Northeast and Midwest is keeping warm this season, although the South is having unusual weather as well. Hopefully, the winter blues won't affect too many of you. Make sure to get enough daylight to keep going and serving our clients with a smile.

    DISASTER RELIEF FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS

By Hannelore Leavy, The Day Spa Association Join us in the mobilization of the day spa and medical spa industries to raise funds to help those who survived the terrible natural disaster that struck the South of Asia and the Asian Islands. Here is what we are doing: We have set up a link on www.dayspaassociation.com for individuals who come to our site to donate to the organization(s) chosen. As of today we have one link in place to American Friends Service Committee; we are looking to add two more in order to give choices.
We encourage each and every one of our members (and other spa professionals) to do their own fundraising on a local level. Periodically, we ask that these funds be transmitted via the link of one of the charities we are working with, on our site. The links are specially coded, and the charities chosen have assured us that we will be able to receive periodic figures of how many donations have been made through our link and how much money was raised collectively through the day spa and medical spa industries.
Should you have clients, and/or would rather submit these funds via check or money order, these can be made payable to the charity of your choice (one of the three we will be featuring) and forwarded to:

    THE DAY SPA ASSOCIATION
    310 - 17th Street
    Union City, NJ 07087
    Attn: Disaster Relief Asia

We will collect these checks, record them and send them on. It will take a long time for those 13 countries and the people affected by this disaster to get back on their feet. We will, therefore, keep raising funds on our websites for as long as necessary! Thank you for caring!

Saving Face (New York Daily Candy)

When it comes to things, men tend to like them noisy, shiny, and jiggly. Gentlemen, time for a subtlety break. Consider the lowly pore. Perhaps it's time you met. Even the most casual relationship can help you make great strides in the battle against razor burn, ingrown hairs, and the unsightly zits you hope no one can see. (Sorry, Charlie, they can.)

Here, to make the introduction, is Nicole Sommers. Equal parts aesthetician and missionary, her expert skin analysis and customized facials are designed exclusively for the male of the species. And, as such, they include a generous amount of as-remedial-as- necessary education.

In further deference to man's natural (pigheaded) modesty when it comes to the cosmetic, she'll come to you - to your bachelor pad, conference room, yacht, or plane. She'll also show up wearing a white nurse's uniform, but never mind about that - this is a serious cleansing, exfoliating, and hydrating intervention. At the moment, Sommers favors super- organic products from Hungary; she even offers a spicy paprika facial. It will leave your skin absolutely glowing. Which, you'll find, is a much better look than "shiny."

From SHIZUKA Day Spa, New York City Anti-Aging with Chocolate & Red Wine!? Eat chocolate and live longer? Using a test developed by Tufts University's USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, Researchers at Penn State University found that with chocolate - the darker the better, because the cocoa bean, the main ingredient of chocolate, and the core of the bitterness contains anti-aging antioxidants. The substances -- called polyphenols -- can prolong the life of yeast cells significantly and they seem to work inside human cells too. Polyphenols are produced by many plants -- perhaps the best known is resveratrol, found in red wine as well. The oldest known person, Jeanne Calment, who lived to be 122 years old consumed two pounds of dark chocolate every week! Enough reason to try a dark chocolate and red wine combination for Valentine's Day! contact@shizukany.com

Hi Linda-Anne: Beautiful, Smart, Caring, Kind, Compassionate, Successful, a Great Role Model - these are just a few of the traits that come to my mind when I think of you. You"re terrific and I'm glad you're being recognized for it. I'm glad you shared this with me. By the way, I learned that my Mom's Grandmother (my Great Grandmother) was Bella Kahn. Perhaps you and I are distant relatives? I've always felt a kinship to you of which there are several reasons for and perhaps this is another. I look forward to catching up with you soon.
    Much love, Victoria

WELL DONE, Linda-Anne - I'm so proud of you!

Would you have fired this employee? (after some correspondence with her I learned that she did not have any instructions in regard to changing names on receipts, etc.)

I worked for a Day Spa as a spa coordinator. A lady had an hour therapeutic massage and when it came to whether she required the receipt for insurance purposes she asked me to change the name to her husbands as she didn't have insurance to cover her and he did. Had he had insurance to cover himself and his family she would have not needed to ask for a change in name on the receipt. I refused to do this as I thought it would be fraud. The lady informed me that my boss did it for her all the time.
Consequently my boss told me it was not illegal and the fact that I had upset one of her local customers meant a reason to fire me. She stated that if any of her customers asked to change the name to Tom, Dick or Harry I should do it.
Please advise me as to whether I was right in this matter. I also wondered as it would have had my name on the receipt as the person who checked her out whether I would have been held responsible and whether there would be any possible affect on the massage therapist should this matter be brought to the attention of the authorities? Please advise me as to who I might report this too as if it is fraud.

Thank you, (name withheld for privacy reason)

    It's about time!
    By Mike Nave

Aveda is finally selling online. It seems the entire beauty industry was afraid to make this move for fear of backlash by distributors and salons; however, Aveda's lead should open the floodgate for manufacturers to sell online while maintaining their financial relationship with distributors, salons and spas. Consumers can now go to Aveda.com to purchase their favorite products. The initiative services new and existing Aveda customers and helps customers find local salons while maintaining the Aveda branded experience. It is also designed to minimize diversion of products sold on unauthorized websites. Whether customers reach the online store through Aveda's website or through a link on salon websites, salons will receive a percentage of their customers' online purchases. For those customers who do not already belong to one of Aveda's salons and spas, the site will refer them to one close by.

This concept is nothing new to Reshare Corporation, which is a pioneer in distribution relationship management and spent a great deal of time providing their knowledge and expertise to Aveda. "Aveda is utilizing our concepts and followed the majority of the recommendations we gave them," says Adam Southam, Reshare's CEO. Dominique Conseil, Aveda's President says, "We believe that our actions products and services always embody the notion of excellence."

FTC postpones effective date of CAN-SPAM rule provisions
    By Carol Krol
The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday announced it has postponed the effective date of rule provisions it adopted Dec.16 establishing criteria for determining whether the primary purpose of an e- mail message is commercial. The FTC had determined in December that the provision would become effective on Feb. 18. However, the federal government's Office of Management and Budget deemed the provision a "major rule," which means the changes cannot take effect until at least 60 days after they are submitted to Congress. Therefore, the revised effective date is now March 28. "It has to do with the potential economic impact of the rule," said Allen W. Hile, assistant director- division of marketing practices at the FTC.

We now have a monthly column in Spa Management Journal starting with the March '05 issue called DAY SPA NEWS. Please keep the member news coming, so we will not run out of material!
